A Home of Support

[second year]

As students, we were asked to design a residential home for a family, “The Smiths.” The house was a two story building where I had to come up with my own idea for a staircase. Along with this challenge, there were three kids, with one that has a disability, so the design of the space not only had to fit the needs of the the children, but also making sure it still represented a home without feeling so out of place.

“When designing this home for the family, one of the major considerations that was takin into account is the way families run. For most people, a family means always being togetherr or being in each other’s business, but the route for designing this home took a different turn. When one considers the definition of “mystery” the first idea that most people think about is being in a house that may be dark and lonely, but the idea behind “mystery” is to hold a sense of retreat for the family within their home. This means having more hidden spaces in order to provide the space one may need in a large family such as the Smith’s family. The sense of “mystery” plays a part in the way that the wall and structure was thought about. With young kids, having different secret room or more walls can be a fun and joyful design for them.”
